Strings over a Gibson Les Paul end tail piece instead of through it. Comments?

I saw a video from Joe Bonamassa with his input that he runs strings over the top of a Les Paul End tail piece and screws the tail piece down to the guitar snug for less tension on the strings at the bridge and neck for better bending of strings and more sustain. He said that Jimi Page also does this.

Any one here do this method? Comments?

See the following email link for Joe Bonamassa:

HI ec,I used to play my 74`deluxe that way and it works great! But it depends on what kinda style you been playing! I don`t play real hard.More like B:B: ! For me it sounds good.I also removed the bridge -that`s great, too.

All the best-Udo-!

Real cool information BC. I have not tried this yet on my Les Paul yet, but I am thinking of trying this.
